Erasmus+ is a program from EU to support education, training, youth, and sport in Europe.

Erasmus+ merge seven prior programs to offer wider opportunities for not just organizations but individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

The aim of this program is to contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for growth, jobs, social equity and inclusion. Also, to promote the sustainable development of higher education by partnering with diverse organizations around the globe.

Lastly, the Erasmus+ scholarships aim to strengthen European cooperation and international links in higher education by engaging students to study at European universities and urging European students and scholars towards developing countries.

In another word, Erasmus+ is good news for students and scholars in Indonesia. Here are some opportunities for non-EU students:

• Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD)

The EMJMD is a prestigious international study program from an international consortium of higher education institutions. Students must study in at least two of the program countries, and part of the studies can take place in partner countries (if any).

Meaning that you will study in different educational institutions and located in different European countries, as long as they are part of the consortium.

The duration for EMJMD lasts from minimum 12 months to maximum 24 months.

The EMJMD scholarship covers students’ participation costs, including the tuition fees, library and laboratory, full insurance coverage and other mandatory costs. Other than participation costs, the scholarship also contributes to students’ travel, installation costs and a monthly allowance for the entire duration of the study.

EMJMD will give a joint or dual degree to the scholarship recipients.

• Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates (EMJD)

For Doctorate students can apply for the EMJD scholarships. A similar system with EMJMD, the EMJD scholarship aims to support Doctoral candidates from partner countries.

The candidates will undergo a training or research in at least two program countries. The only difference is in the length of the scholarships.

The EMJD duration is granted for a maximum three years, which the candidates should study in Ph.D. programs in Europe for at least two-thirds of the scholarships-covered period.

Also, the candidates need to finish their research in a maximum of four years. EMJD will give a joint or dual degree to the Doctorate candidates.

However, EMJD only available for several fields of category, namely:

  • Engineering, Manufacture and Construction
  • Humanities and Arts
  • Social sciences, Business and Law
  • Agriculture and Veterinary
  • Health and Welfare
  • Science, Mathematics and Computing

Now let’s see the requirements for both programs:

  • Non-EU citizens
  • Must obtain a Bachelor equivalent degree before the submission deadline of EMJMD or EMJD
  • Never received any EU-funded scholarship scheme or already received an EMJMD or EMJD scholarship.

If you are interested in Erasmus+ programs, remember that students should contact the consortium for more information on application procedures. Most educational institution in the consortium requires applications to be submitted between October and January for the following academic year.

Here are our guidelines to apply for either program:

  1. Consult the online EMJMD Catalogue for complete list of Master or Doctorate courses. Acquire a detailed program description, requirements, application procedures, etc.
  2. Apply directly to the Consortium website
  3. The Consortium will sort applications and suggest a list of recipients to the European Commission for approval.
  4. The Consortium will inform the applicants whether they pass the EMJMD or EMJD program. Usually, the formal information will occur in May.

In 2017, there were a total of 225 Indonesian students and lecturers awarded the Erasmus+ Program. You can be a part of these scholars to study in the European Union.

As Confucius once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” start taking the first step for your future.
